Breathe easy. The Indianapolis 500 will have eleven rows of three. We think.
KV Racing appears to be stepping up and fielding their fourth entry in this year's Indianapolis 500 for Australian James Davison. He is slated to drive the #33 Chevrolet.
Davison comes from a historic Australian racing family but will become the first in his family to race in the Indianapolis 500.
Davison's grandfather Lex is a four-time winner of the Australian Grand Prix, tied with Michael Schumacher for most all-time. Lex was the 1957 Australian Driver's champion. His cousins Alex and Will both race in the V8 Supercars Series in Australia. Alex has race win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It came in a Porsche Supercup support race to the 2002 United States Grand Prix. Will has 16 race victories in V8 Supercars and drives for Erebus Mercedes. Will and Alex team for the three endurance races on the V8 Supercar schedule. James' step-grandfather Tony Gaze was a decorated World War II and made three Formula One starts in 1952 at Spa, Silverstone and the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
James finished second in the 2007 Star Mazda Championship to Dane Cameron. He raced two seasons in Indy Lights where he picked up two victories, both at Mid-Ohio, and finished second in the 2009 championship standings to JR Hildebrand and ahead of current IndyCar drivers Sebastián Saavedra, James Hinchcliffe and Charlie Kimball. In his two Freedom 100 starts, Davison finished 16th and 6th. Should he qualify, this will be James' third career IndyCar start. He made his first two last season at Mid-Ohio and Sonoma driving for Dale Coyne Racing. He finished 15th and 18th in those races respectively.
Davison will bring up the total number of Indianapolis 500 rookies to seven. He would join Martin Plowman, Kurt Busch, Jack Hawksworth, Carlos Huertas, Sage Karam and Mikhail Aleshin. Should they all make the race, the total number of drivers to have started the Indianapolis 500 would increase to 756 drivers. Davison would also join fellow Australians Will Power and Ryan Briscoe on the grid. Davison is set to become the eighth different Australian to raced the Indianapolis 500 joining Power, Briscoe, Dennis Firestone, Brad Murphey, Jack and Geoff Brabahm and Vern Schuppen, who still holds the best Indianapolis 500 finish for an Australian when he finished 3rd in 1981.
Davison is expected to get on track middle of next week.
