Matt Kenseth finished sixth with his teammate Denny Hamlin coming home in seventh and third in the championship. Hamlin was leading late after deciding not to pit when most of the other leaders did. He was able to hold Newman but once Harvick charged to the front on fresh tires, Hamlin faded. Clint Bowyer finished eighth while Hendrick teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon rounds out the top ten. Gordon led a race-high 161 laps but pitted under the final caution while most of the other drivers on the lead lap stayed out.
Kyle Larson finished thirteenth and will be 2014 Rookie of the Year. Joey Logano finished sixteenth after running in the top ten all day. On Logano's final pit stop, the car fell off the jack when changing left side tires, dropping the Penske driver out of contention for the victory and the championship. Chevrolet has locked up their 38th manufactures' champion and their 12th consecutive.
This is Harvick's first career Cup title and this is Stewart-Haas Racing's second title in three years. Harvick ends 2014 with five victories, 14 top fives, 20 top tens and eight pole positions, the most of the season. Harvick led NASCAR in laps led with 2,137 led this season. He also was running at the finish of 34 of 36 races with 27 lead lap finishes.
Newman did not win in 2014 but he will finish second in the championship. Newman's second place finish at Homestead was his fifth top five of 2014 and 16th top ten. He led 41 laps all season and did not score a pole position. Newman was running at the end of 35 of 36 races with the exception being Watkins Glen.
Hamlin will finished third in the championship with his lone victory coming at Talladega in May. He ends with seven top fives, 18 top tens and three pole positions. He was running at the end of 33 races. This is Hamlin's fourth time finishing in the top five of the championship.
Logano ends 2014 with a career best finish in the championship in fourth and career-best for wins in a season with five. Logano ends 2014 with the second most top fives with 16 and tied for second in top tens with 22 top tens. He was running at the end of 32 races.
Harvick becomes the third driver to win both the Cup and Grand National (Busch/Nationwide) Series championships in a career. Bobby Labonte and Brad Keselowski are the other two drivers to win both.
