Lewis Hamilton Becomes Winningest British Driver in Formula One History

Lewis Hamilton extends his championship lead and becomes the all-time winningest British driver in Formula One with his fifth consecutive victory. This was Hamilton's third career victory in the United States and the 32nd of his career as he passes Nigel Mansell for fifth all-time in Formula One victories. He now sits one behind Fernando Alonso for fifth all-time. Nico Rosberg made it a Mercedes 1-2. The German led from the start but lost the lead after Hamilton made a bold move on the inside of turn 11.

Daniel Ricciardo held on for third, his first career finish in the points in the United States. The Australian had to hold off a hard charging Felipe Massa. Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top five. Fernando Alonso came home in sixth with Sebastian Vettel finishing seventh despite starting from the pit lane and four pit stops. Kevin Magnussen finished eighth, the lone McLaren to finish in the points.

Pastor Maldonado came home in ninth, his first time in the points this season and first points since Hungary last year. Jean-Éric Vergne finished tenth but is under investigation after an incident between him and his fellow Frenchman Romain Grosjean in turn one. Slight contact sent Grosjean off course on exit but Grosjean was able to continue however he finished a lap down in 11th. Jenson Button came home 12th ahead of his fellow former world champion Kimi Räikkonen. Esteban Gutiérrez and Daniil Kvyat rounded out the top fifteen.

Three drivers retired from the United States Grand Prix. On lap seventeen, Nico Hülkenberg retired after losing on the exit of turn eleven. After scoring in the first ten races of the season, Hülkenberg has only scored in three of the last seven races. Sergio Pérez and Adrain Sutil both retired on lap one after the Mexican made an ambitious move on the inside of turn sixteen. Sutil has never completed a racing lap at Circuit of the Americas.

With his tenth victory of the season, Lewis Hamilton has 316 points and leads the world championship by 24 points over Nico Rosberg. The title is guaranteed to go to the final race as should Hamilton win at Interlagos in a weeks time and Rosberg finish outside the points, the gap would be 49 points between the two drivers with 50 on the table in Abu Dhabi.

Daniel Ricciardo was eliminated from championship contention but the Australian is third in the championship with 214 points, 59 clear of Valtteri Bottas. Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso are tied for fifth in the championship with 149 points. Jenson Button remains seventh but Felipe Massa is now within 11 of the Brit. Nico Hülkenberg drops ninth after his retirement and Kevin Magnussen extends his gap between him, Sergio Pérez and Kimi Räikkönen for tenth in the championship.

The penultimate round of the 2014 Formula One season takes place next week from Interlagos for the running of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
